A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
