British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
