The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
